Canoe the mangroves

Canoeing the mangroves

We are extremely blessed having a gorgeous bay such as Pelican Bay in front of the lodge.  This Bay is largely protected from the open ocean and strong winds making it one of the highlights of your stay.  A pair of single canoes as well as two tandem canoes can be launched by the staff upon request, and with these you can enjoy either a guided or private exploration of the crystal clear calm waters which extend nearly 2km from the lodge and into a maze of sandbanks and islands lined by dense mangroves, hosting birds, fish and a multitude of crustaceans that thrive in the tidal Bay.

Being tidal, this Bay has water the vast majority of time, but during the spring low tide will drain completely for a few hours a day a few days once a month, though this is also the time when the Bay reached its highest levels and the water nearly laps up to the ocean view rooms’ decks!  This daily filling and emptying causes large movements of smaller fish, and makes it a hotspot for hunting pelicans, herons, cormorants, egrets and storks, especially on the receding tide.  We’ve even seen shy humpback dolphins and even giant trivially enter the Bay on occasion and swim right up to the beach in front of the lodge.
