Starfish City
Nestled between a range of protected sandbanks and in close proximity to the lodge lies a wonder of nature with hundreds, and sometimes thousands of giant beaded starfish of every size, hue and colour.
Locals have fondly started referring to the area as starfish city and visiting this spectacle during low tide make for easy viewing and snorkelling in the clear shallow warm waters.
Hopping on the boat from the lodge, a short scenic trip through and around the maze of channels should get you in position within 10 minutes
Together with the plentiful and colourful starfish, the sandbank hosts a surprising variety of life from carpet anemones with small cleaner shrimps, upright sea-pens undulating in the soft current and sand-dollars (pansy shells) strewn across the seafloor. Being in close proximity to a range of shallows one will often be accompanied by ever-present flamingoes feeding in the distant seascape
Forming part of the protected San Sebastián Coastal waters only a handful know of its exact whereabouts in a tucked away corner protecting them from tides, waves, and the infrequent cyclones that reach this part of tropical Africa.
The waters are often so calm that one can easily distinguish the underwater trails left by the starfishes’ tubular feet across the sandy substrate, even hours after the starfish passing by.
This easy -to-do activity can be followed by a visit to nearby Banque island to relax on the sand with a fresh seafood barbecue sizzling whilst soaking up the sun
