Following the great success of our first two flash workshops hosted by Tusk Photo, a follow-up workshop is planned for April 2019.

The advent of higher quality camera sensors have led to creative photographers creating startlingly original images with the inclusion of something even as dim as distant stars in their images.  The use of flash in combination with long exposures make this possible, although we believe the incorrect use of flash can have a detrimental effect on nocturnal subjects. Zimanga reached an agreement with Tusk Photo in a document regulating the responsible use of flash at hides, and Tusk Photo was the first operator group to be allowed the use of flash at the hides during a first of its kind workshop in April 2018.  Since then another successful workshop was hosted in November 2018, with our third instalment due in April 2019.

To those seeking new opportunities to have the chance to obtain such images, we have decided to limit the use of flash only if those guides accredited to have signed the agreement are with guides in the hides.  This was not something we took on lightly, as not only can irresponsible use of flash be potentially detrimental to subjects, but the incorrect setup of flash can also disturb sensitive or shy animal species, meaning they could possibly avoid the hides in future.  Apart from the technical requirements of using flash through one-way glass there is also the actual setup of flash, and the combined exposures of camera and flash required to not only balance subjects against the background but more importantly to utilise minimal flash power output or softboxes to create spectacular images.

We are proud to announce our second flash workshop with Tusk Photo, to be hosted in April 2019.  The booking takes place over a moon phase suited for star photography and should the weather and subjects work together this will be another once-in-a-lifetime experience.  This unique offering includes the following:

  • Exclusive use for the workshop group of Zimanga and all its activities
  • Tuition on advanced flash photography by award-winning wildlife photographers Brendon Cremer and Wim van den Heever
  • Techniques covered include combined backlight/flash photography, long exposure star and subject photography, as well as the use of in-camera multi-exposure
  • Equipment required for off-camera flash setup
  • A minimum of 2 nights in an Overnight Hide per 4 day trip, including use of Zimanga’s latest hide, the Tamboti Overnight Hide
  • Accommodation at the new Zimanga Main Lodge
  • Cost Eur 1580 per person (4 days).  No single supplement for single guests (limited space)
